96: guptikaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | yadā bhagavatā stavakarṇikanimantritena saupārake nagare mahājanavineyākarṣaṇaṃ kṛtam*, tadā sarvaḥ saupārakanivāsī janakāyo buddhanimno dharmapravaṇaḥ saṃghaprāgbhāro vyavasthitaḥ ||

saupārake nagare ’nyatamo gṛhapatir āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jātaḥ jātamātrasya sarvaśarīraṃ piṭakaiḥ sphuṭaṃ saṃvṛttam* | yadā te piṭakāḥ sphuṭitāḥ, tadā ekadhano māṃsapiṇḍaḥ saṃsthitaḥ | pūyaśoṇitaṃ cāsya śarīrāt pragharan mahaddaurgandhaṃ janayati | tato ’sya pitā aiśvaryabalādhānena dravya­mantra­uṣadhi­pari­cārakasametaḥ svayam evārabdhaś cikitsāṃ kartum*, na cāsau vyādhir upaśamaṃ gacchati karmabalādhānaprāptatvāt* | sa svaśarīraṃ tathā vikṣatam apatrāpya parigṛhītaṃ vastrair gopāyati | tasya guptika iti nāma kṛtam* | yāvad guptiko dārako mahān saṃvṛttas tasya vayasyakāḥ sahajātakāḥ śrāvastyāḥ saupārakanagaram anuprāptāḥ | tatas taiḥ pitur asya kathyate: tāta yady eṣa śrāvastīṃ nīyate, śakyetāsmād vyādheḥ parimocayitum*, yasmāt tatra santi vaidyabhaiṣajādayaḥ sulabhā iti ||

tataḥ pitrā tad vacanam upaśrutya prabhūtāni ratnāni paricārakāṃś ca datvā śrāvastīm anupreṣitaḥ | so ’nupūrveṇa vayasyakasahāyaḥ śrāvastīm anuprāptaḥ | tatrāpy asya karmajo vyādhiḥ saty api vaidyadravyauṣadhi­pari­cārakabāhulye na śakyate cikitsitum* | yāvad asāv apareṇa samayena jetavanaṃ nirgataḥ | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasāditam* | prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasmai bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā pañcopādānaskandhā rogato gaṇḍataḥ śalyato ’ghato ’nityato duḥkhataḥ śūnyato ’nātmataś ca deśitāḥ | sa saṃskārānityatāṃ viditvā bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | te ’py asya sahajātakās tenaiva saṃvegena pravrajitāḥ ||

te yenāyuṣmān guptikas tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ | upasaṃkramyāyuṣmantaṃ guptikam idam avocan*: kim āyuṣman guptika pralopadharma, kiṃ vā atra loke ’pralopadharma? rūpam āyuṣmantaḥ pralopadharma | tasya nirodhān nirvāṇam apralopadharma | vedanā saṃjñā saṃskārā vijñānam āyuṣmantaḥ pralopadharma | tasya nirodhān nirvāṇam apralopadharma | kiṃ manyadhve āyuṣmantaḥ: rūpaṃ nityaṃ vā anityaṃ vā? anityam idam āyuṣman guptika | yat punar anityaṃ duḥkhaṃ vā tan na vā, duḥkham*? duḥkham idam āyuṣman guptika | yat punar anityaṃ duḥkhaṃ vipariṇāmadharma, satyam api tac chrutavān āryaśrāvaka ātmata upagacched etan mama, eṣo ’ham asmi, eṣa me ātmety evam etat? no āyuṣman guptika | kiṃ manyadhve āyuṣmantaḥ: vedanā saṃjñā saṃskārā vijñānaṃ nityaṃ vā anityaṃ vā? anityam idam āyuṣman guptika | yat punar anityaṃ duḥkham*? duḥkham idam āyuṣman guptika | yat punar anityaṃ duḥkhaṃ vipariṇāmadharma, api tac chrutavān āryaśrāvaka ātmata upagacchet*: etan mama, eṣo ’ham asmi, eṣa me ātmeti? no āyuṣman guptika | tasmāt tarhi āyuṣmanto yat kiṃcid rūpam atītānāgatapratyutpannam ādhyātmikaṃ vā bāhyaṃ vā audārikaṃ vā sūkṣmaṃ vā hīnaṃ vā praṇītaṃ vā, yad vā dūre, yad vāntike, tat sarvaṃ naitan mama, naiṣo ’ham asmi, naiṣa me ātmety evam etad yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā draṣṭavyam* | yā kācid vedanā saṃjñā saṃskārā yat kiṃcid vijñānam atītānāgatapratyutpannam ādhyātmikaṃ vā bāhyaṃ vā audārikaṃ vā sūkṣmaṃ vā hīnaṃ vā praṇītaṃ vā, yad vā dūre, yad vāntike, tat sarvaṃ naitan mama, naiṣo ’ham asmi, naiṣa me ātmety evam etad yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā draṣṭavyam* | evaṃdarśī āyuṣmantaḥ śrutavān āryaśrāvako rūpād api nirvidyate, vedanāyāḥ saṃjñāyāḥ saṃskārebhyo vijñānād api | nirviṇṇo virujyate, virako vimucyate | vimuktam evaṃ jñānadarśanaṃ bhavati: kṣīṇā me jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryaṃ kṛtaṃ karaṇīyam* | nāparam asmād bhavaṃ prajānāmīti ||

asmin khalu dharmaparyāye bhāṣyamāṇe teṣāṃ sahajātakānāṃ virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣur utpannam* | bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta guptikena karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenāsya śārīram evaṃ bībhatsavyādhibahulaṃ durgandhaṃ saṃvṛttam* | kiṃ karma kṛtaṃ yena tīkṣṇaniśitabuddhiḥ saṃvṛttaḥ, pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: guptikenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | guptikena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ anyatamaḥ śreṣṭhī | sa dvitīyaśreṣṭhinā sārdhaṃ viruddhaḥ | tatas tena rājā prabhūtaṃ dhanaṃ datvā vijñāpitaḥ: deva ayaṃ śreṣṭhī aparādhikaḥ, kriyatām asya daṇḍanigraha iti | tato rājñā tasyaivānujñātaḥ | tenāsau svagṛham ānīya talābhis tāḍitaḥ | tato rudhirāvasiktaśarīrasya prabhūtaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ ca viṣacūrṇaṃ datvoptam*, yenāsya tac charīram ekadhanaṃ māṃsapiṇḍavad avasthitam* | tatas tasya śreṣṭhino vayasyakaiḥ śrutam*: yathā tenaivaṃvidhaṃ karma kṛtam iti | tatas taiḥ sametair bhūtvā + + + upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ yair upakaraṇaviśeṣais tasmād vyādheḥ parimocitaḥ | tato ’sau tenaiva ca saṃvegena gṛhān niṣkramya pravrajitaḥ | tena anācāryakeṇa saptatriṃśadbodhipakṣyān dharmān bhāvayitvā pratyekā bodhiḥ sākṣātkṛtā | tato ’sya cittam utpannam*: bahv anena śreṣṭhinā matsaṃtāpād apuṇyaṃ prasūtam* | yanv aham enaṃ gatvā saṃvejayeyam iti | tatas tasyāgrato gatvā upari vihāyasam abhyudgamya vicitrāṇi prātihāryāṇi vidarśayitum ārabdhaḥ | āśu pṛthagjanānām ṛddhir āvarjanakarī | sa mūlanikṛtta iva drumaḥ pādayor nipatya kṛtakarapuṭo bhagavantaṃ vijñāpayati: avatara, avatara mahādakṣiṇīya, kṛtāparādho ’haṃ tavāntike, tvām eva niśritya punaḥ, pratyupasthāsyāmīti | tenāsau pratyekabuddhaḥ kṣamāpayitvā piṇḍakena pratipādya paṭenācchāditaḥ | praṇidhānaṃ ca kṛtam*: yan mayā krodhābhibhūtena tavāparādhaḥ kṛtaḥ, mā asya karmaṇo vipākaṃ pratyanubhaveyam* | yan mayā satkāraḥ kṛtaḥ, anenaivaṃvidhānāṃ guṇānāṃ lābhī syām*, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāram ārāgayeyam iti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena śreṣṭhī āsīt*, ayam sa guptikaḥ | tasya karmaṇaḥ prabhāvāt pañca janmaśatāni kaśābhis tāḍyamānaḥ kālaṃ kṛtavān* | tenaiva hetunā ayam evaṃvidhaṃ āśraya āsāditaḥ | bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati sahajātakair vayasyakaiḥ sārdhaṃ pravrajita āsīt*| tatraibhir brahmacaryavāsaḥ paripālitaḥ | tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
