buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | śrāvastyām anyatamo brahmaṇa āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto durvarṇo durdarśano ’vahoḍimakaḥ | jātamātrasya cāsya mātuḥ stanābhyāṃ kṣīram antarhitam* | yāvat tena brāhmaṇena tasyānyā dhātrī ānītā | tasyā api kṣīram antarhitam* | tasya dārikasya karmavipākataḥ | yadāsya kṣīrasaṃbhavaḥ sarvair apy upāyair na saṃbhavati, tadāsau lehenodbhṛtaḥ Speyer: lehenoddhṛtaḥ | tasya lekuñcika iti nāmadheyaṃ kṛtam* | so ’lpeśākhyo ’lpapuṇyaś ca ||

yadā mahān saṃvṛttas tadā udarapūraṇam api nāsādayati | paśyati ca bhikṣūn sunivasitān suprāvṛtān bhramarasadṛśāni pātrāṇi gṛhītvā śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya praviśataḥ | tāṃś ca pūrṇahastān pūrṇapātrān pratiniṣkrāmataḥ | tasya dṛṣṭvā bhagavacchāsane pravrajyābhilāṣa utpannaḥ | sa mātāpitarāv anujñāpya bhagavacchāsane pravrajito ’py udarapūraṇaṃ nāsādayati | tena tenaiva saṃvegena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ ||

yāvad asāv apareṇa samayena bhagavato gandhakuṭīṃ saṃmārjituṃ pravṛttaḥ | sa tāṃ saṃmṛjya pātracīvaram ādāya śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat* | tatas tena prabhūtaḥ praṇītaś ca piṇḍapāta āsāditaḥ, yenāsya saṃtarpitānīndriyāṇi mahābhūtāni | tatas tena saṃtarpitendriyeṇa kṛtsnā rātrir dhyāna­vimokṣasamā­patti­bhir atināmitā | tato ’sya buddhir utpannā: śobhano ’yam upāyo yanv ahaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ vijñāpayeyam iti | tena sarva eva bhikṣusaṃgho vijñāpitaḥ: ahaṃ bhadanta alpapuṇyo yadā gandhakuṭīṃ saṃmṛjya piṇḍapātaṃ praviśāmi, tadā tṛptiṃ labhe | tan me saṃghaḥ kāruṇyaṃ karotu, nānyena bhagavato gandhakuṭī saṃmrāṣṭavyeti | tataḥ saṃghena kriyākāraḥ kṛtaḥ: na kenacid bhagavato gandhakuṭī saṃmrāṣṭavyeti | sa visrabdho gandhakuṭīṃ saṃmṛjya paścāc chrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya praviśati ||

tasmiṃś ca samaye āyuṣmāñ chāradvatīputraḥ pañcaśataparivāro janapade varṣoṣitaḥ śrāvastyām abhyāgataḥ | tataḥ śāstur gauravajāto gandhakuṭīṃ saṃmārṣṭum ārabdhaḥ | sa āyuṣmatā lekuñcikena lakṣitaḥ | tenocyate: sthavira udare mama prahāro dattaḥ, yat te gandhakuṭī saṃmṛṣṭeti | sthaviraḥ prāha: katham iti? lekuñcikaḥ kathayati: sthavira, yadāhaṃ gandhakuṭīṃ na saṃmārjitavāṃs tadā piṇḍapātaṃ nāsādayāmīti | tataḥ sthaviraśāriputreṇoktam: yady evam aham anyatra nimantritaḥ | alpotsukas tvaṃ bhava | ahaṃ tatra tubhyaṃ piṇḍapātaṃ dāsyāmīti | tataḥ sthaviraśāriputraḥ pañcaśataparivāro nimantraṇakaṃ prasthitaḥ | lekuñciko ’pi tenaiva sārdhaṃ saṃprasthitaḥ | yadā gṛhapater gṛhasamīpaṃ gatas tadā lekuñcikasya karmavipākena tasmin gṛhe mahān kalahaḥ samutpannaḥ | tata āyuṣmato lekuñcikasyaitad abhavat: mamālpapuṇyatayā tatra kalaho jāta iti | tataḥ pratinivṛtya vihāraṃ gatvā bhaktacchedam akarot* | tato dvitīye divase sthaviraśāriputreṇocyate: kimarthaṃ tvaṃ na gata iti | tenoktam*: sthavireṇa nāvagatam*: mamālpapuṇyatayā yādṛśas tatra kalaho jāta iti | tataḥ sthaviraśāriputreṇānyatra divase taṃ puraskṛtya tad gṛhaṃ praveśitaḥ | saṃghamadhye copaviṣṭasya sataḥ pradakṣiṇaś cāhāro dīyate | tatra pariveṣakajano vismarati | tena saṃghamadhye dvitīyo bhaktacchedaḥ kṛtaḥ ||

yāvad iyaṃ pravṛttiḥ sthavirānandena śrutā | śrutvā ca lekuñcikam uvāca: tena hi tvam ihaiva jetavane tiṣṭha, ahaṃ te piṇḍapātam āneṣyāmīti | sthavirānandasyaivaṃvidhā smṛtiḥ | yadā bhagavato ’ntikād aśītir dharmaskandhasahasrāṇy udgṛhītāni + + + | lekuñcikasya ca karmāvaraṇena sthavirānandena vismṛtam* | tatrānena tṛtīyo bhaktacchedaḥ kṛtaḥ | caturthe divase sthavirānandenāsthāṃ kṛtvā piṇḍapāto dattaḥ | so ’pi nirgacchataḥ śvabhir apahṛtaḥ | tatrānena caturtho bhaktacchedaḥ kṛtaḥ ||

pañcame divase sthaviramaudgalyāyanena śrutvā lekuñcikasyāthāya piṇḍapātaṃ gṛhītvā ṛddhyā saṃprasthitam* | lekuñcikasya karmavipākena suparṇinā pakṣirājena pakṣaiḥ parāhatya mahāsamudre pātitaḥ | tatrānena pañcamo bhatacchedaḥ kṛtaḥ ||

ṣaṣṭhe divase śāriputreṇa śrutam* | tasyaitad abhavat*: yanv ahaṃ lekuñcikasya piṇḍapātaṃ + + ++ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + lekuñcikasya kuṭikādvāre ’vasthitaḥ | tato lekuñcikasya karmavipākena tad api dvāraṃ śilābhir āvṛtam* | tataḥ śāriputreṇa ṛddhyā mokṣyāmīti tat pātraṃ pṛthivyāṃ sthāpitam* | tad api lekuñcikasya karmavipākena | athāśītiṣu yojanasahasreṣu kāñcanamayyāṃ pṛthivyām avasthitam* | tato ’pi sthaviraśāriputreṇa ṛddhyā samuddhṛtya tat piṇḍakaṃ mukhadvāraśleṣite piṇḍapāte tasya karmāvaraṇena tan mukham ekadhanaṃ saṃvṛttam* | tata āyuṣmāñ chāriputro lekuñcikasyābhavyatāṃ jñātvā saṃvignaḥ | tena ca bhadantena ṣaḍ bhaktacchedāḥ kṛtāḥ ||

tataḥ saptame divase āyuṣmāl lekuñcikaḥ satvānām udvejanārthaṃ karmaṇāṃ cāvipraṇaśa­saṃ­darśanārthaṃ karmabalodbhāvanārthaṃ ca bhasmanā pātraṃ pūrayitvā buddhapramukhasya bhikṣusaṃghasya purastān niṣadya udakenāloḍya pītvā nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtaḥ | tam abhivīkṣya bhikṣavaḥ saṃvignāḥ tasya śarīre śarīrapūjāṃ kṛtvā saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta lekuñcikena karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenārhatvaprāpto ’pi ṣaḍ bhaktacchedān kṛtvā saptame divase nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛta iti | bhagavān āha: lekuñcikenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | lekuñcikena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryām anyatamā gṛhapatipatnī śrāddhā bhadrā kalyāṇāśayā | sā abhīṣṇaṃ śrama­ṇabrāhmaṇakṛpaṇavanīpakayācanakebhyo dānāni dadāti | tasyā apareṇa samayena bhartā kālagataḥ | yāvad asyāḥ putraḥ svagṛhe svāmī saṃvṛttaḥ | sa ca matsarī kuṭukuñcakaḥ āgṛhītapariṣkāraḥ kākāya baliṃ na pradātuṃ vyavasyati | sa śrama­ṇabrāhmaṇakṛpaṇavanīpakān dṛṣṭvā cittaṃ pradūṣayati | tasya mātā tenaiva pūrvakrameṇa śrama­ṇabrāhmaṇakṛpaṇavanīpakebhyo dānapradānāny anuprayacchati | tasyāḥ putro mātsaryābhibhūtaḥ kathayati: amba na me rocate Speyer: rocyate | mā dānam anuprayaccheti | sā kathayati: putraka iha kule eṣa kuladharma iti | tatas tena pṛthagbhaktena sthāpitā | tathāpy asāv upārdhād dānam anuprayacchati, upārdham ātmanā paribhuñkte | tatas tena mātsaryābhibhūtena krodhenāvṛtabuddhinā bhūyo nivāryata eva | yadā sarvāvasthāyāṃ na śaknoti vārayitum*, tadā mātaram uvāca: amba kiṃcit karaṇīyam asti, avavarakaṃ praviśeti | sā ṛjusvabhāvatayā avavarakaṃ praviṣṭā | tatas tena dvāraṃ baddhvā ekaṃ bhaktacchedaṃ kāritā | sā kathayati: putra bubhukṣitāsmīti | tatas tena kharaṃ vākkarma niścāritam*: bhasma khādeti | yāvat tenāsau kṛcchra­saṃ­kaṭa­saṃ­bādhaprāptā sakaruṇakaruṇaṃ vikrośamānā ṣaḍ bhaktacchedān kāritā, tathāpi na pratimuktā | kālagatā | tadāsya mātsaryeṇāvṛtasya mātṛviyogād vipratisāro jātaḥ ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena gṛhapatiputraḥ, ayaṃ sa lekuñcikaḥ | yad anena mātur apakāraḥ kṛtas tasya karmaṇo vipākena kalpam avīcau mahānaraka utpannaḥ | tenaiva hetunā idānīm apy arhatvaprāptaḥ ṣaḍ bhaktacchedān kṛtvā bhasmād anāhāra eva parinirvṛtaḥ | anyāny api bhikṣavo lekuñcikena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryām anyatamo brāhmaṇo devatārcikaḥ sarveṣāṃ vārāṇaseyānāṃ brāhmaṇagṛhapatīnāṃ satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito ’bhimataś ca sarvajanasya | dharmatā caiṣā yad asati buddhānām utpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya | yāvad anyatamaḥ pratyekabuddho vārāṇasīṃ piṇḍāya praviṣṭaḥ | sa ca tatra pūrṇahastaḥ pūrṇapātro nirgacchati | tena brāhmanena dṛṣṭaḥ | tasya mātsaryam utpannam* | kathayati: ānaya yāvat pātraṃ paśyāmīti | asamanvāhṛtya ca śrāvakapratyekabuddhānāṃ jñānadarśanaṃ na pravartata iti | tena bhadantenopanāmitam* | tatas tena pṛthivyām utsṛjya pādenābhimṛditam* | tatas tena pratyekabuddhena bhaktachedaḥ kṛtaḥ | na ca tasya brāhmaṇasya vipratisāro jātaḥ ||

kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau brāhmaṇaḥ, ayam evāsau lekuñcikaḥ | bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati pravrajito babhūva | tatrānena brahmacaryavāsaḥ paripālitaḥ | tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
