91: subhūtiḥ

tasyoddānam*:
subhūtiḥ sthaviraś cāpi hasta lekuñcikas tathā
saṃsāro guptikaś cāpi virūpo gaṅgikena ca
dīrghanakhaḥ saṃgītiś ca vargo bhavati samudditaḥ ||

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | yadā bhagavatā anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim abhisaṃbudhya śrāvakā niyuktās teṣu janapadeṣu vineyajanānugrahārtham*, tadā ye ’dhyāyinas te sumerupariṣaṇḍāyāṃ dhyānaparā sthitāḥ | yāvat suparṇipakṣirājena mahāsamudrān nāgapotalaka uddhṛtaḥ | sa taṃ sumerupariṣaṇḍāyām āropya bhakṣayitum ārabdhaḥ | tato nāgapotalako jīvitād vyaparopyamāṇo mahāśrāvakāṇām antike cittam abhiprasādya kālagataḥ ||

sa kālaṃ kṛtvā śrāvastyāṃ bhūtir nāma brāhmaṇaḥ, tasyāgramahiṣyāḥ kukṣāv upapannaḥ | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād asya pitā bhūtiḥ, tasmād bhavatu dārakasya subhūtir iti nāmeti | subhūtir dāraka unnīto vardhito mahān samvṛttaḥ | sa pūrveṇa hetubalādhānena atīva roṣaṇaḥ krodhaparyavasthānabahulo mātāpitṛbhyām ātharvaṇād vinivartya ṛṣiṣu pravrājitaḥ | sa ca tatra dhyānaparaḥ saṃyato ’nyatarad vanaṣaṇḍam upaniśritya viharati | tatra ca vanaṣaṇḍe devatā prativasati dṛṣṭasatyā | tasyāḥ kāruṇyam utpannam*: ayaṃ kulaputraḥ krodhaparyavasthānabahalo viśeṣaṃ nādhigacchati | yanv aham enaṃ bhagavaddarśane niyojayeyam iti | tatas tayā devatayā subhūteḥ purastād buddhasya varṇo bhāṣito dharmasya ca saṃghasya ca | tataḥ subhūter bhagavaddarśanahetor abhilāṣa utpannaḥ | tato devatayā ṛddhyanubhāvād Speyer: ṛddhyānubhāvād bhagavatsakāśam upanītaḥ | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cāsya yo ’bhūt satveṣv āghātaḥ, sa prativigataḥ | tataḥ prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā subhūtinā kulaputreṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyo bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena maitrībhāvanayā cittaṃ damayitvā sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ ||

tatra āyuṣmān subhūtiḥ samanvāhartuṃ pravṛttaḥ: kuto ’haṃ cyutaḥ, kutropapannaḥ kena karmaṇeti | paśyati: pañca jātiśatāni nāgebhyaś cyuto nāgeṣv evopapannaḥ | tasya buddhir utpannā: mayā atīva evaṃvidho dveṣapratyayopasaṃbhāraḥ kṛtaḥ, yenāhaṃ pañca janmaśatāni nāgeṣūpapannaḥ | tenaiva hetunā mahadvyasanam anubhūtavān* | idānīṃ punas tathā kariṣyāmi yat pareṣām antike dveṣopasaṃbhāro notpatsyate | yena samanvāgataḥ kāyasya bhedād apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakeṣūpapadyate | so ’raṇyapratipadaṃ samādāya vartate | yadā saṃghe vā grāme vā deśe vā janapade vā bhikṣāhetor vihartukāmo bhavati, tadā pūrvataraṃ gocaram avalokayati: mā māṃ kaścit kāraṇena dṛṣṭvā cittaṃ pradūṣayiṣyati, antataḥ kuntapipīlakā apīti | sa tānīryāpathena praśritenābhiramayati | tena teṣāṃ satvānāṃ cittaprasādo bhavati | evaṃvidhāṃ so ’rhatvaprāpto ’py apatrapām anubhavatīti | tata āyuṣmataḥ subhūter buddhir utpannā: yanv aham idānīṃ mahājanānugrahārthaṃ kuryām iti | tatas tena ṛddhyā pañca suparṇiśatāni nirmitāni, yāni dṛṣṭvā nāgā bhītās trastā saṃvignā itaś cāmutaś ca saṃbhrāntāḥ | tataḥ subhūtinā ṛddhibalena punaḥ paritrātāḥ | tatas teṣāṃ prasannacittānāṃ maitrī vyapadiṣṭā | punar api mahāntaṃ nāgarūpam abhinirmāya pañca garuḍaśatāny abhidrutāni | teṣām api bhītānāṃ maitrī vyapadiṣṭā | evaṃ tena nāgānāṃ garuḍānāṃ ca pañca kulaśatāni vinītāni | tatra bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma: eṣo ’gro me bhikṣavo bhikṣūṇāṃ mama śrāvakāṇām araṇāvihāriṇāṃ yaduta subhūtiḥ kulaputraḥ ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta subhūtinā karmāṇi kṛtāni yenāraṇāvihāriṇām agro nirdiṣṭa iti | bhagavān āha: subhūtinaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | subhūtinā karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany asminn eva bhadrake kalpe viṃśativarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīm upaniśritya viharati ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve | tatrāyaṃ pravrajito babhūva | tatrānena dānapradānāni dattāni, daśavarṣashasrāṇi brahmacaryavāsaḥ paripālitaḥ, praṇidhānaṃ ca kṛtam*: anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena cittotpādena deyadharmaparityāgena ca yo ’sau bhagavatā kāśyapena uttaro nāma māṇavo vyākṛtaḥ: bhaviṣyasi tvaṃ māṇava varṣaśatāyuṣi prajāyāṃ śākyamunir nāma tathāgato ’rhan samyaksaṃbuddha iti, tasyāhaṃ śāsane pravrajya araṇāvihāriṇām agraḥ syām iti ||

+ + + kāni karmāṇi kṛtāni yena nāgeṣūpapannaḥ? aprahīṇatvāt kleśānām udbhrāntatvād indriyāṇām aparyantīkṛtatvāt karmapathānāṃ śaikṣāśaikṣabhikṣuṣu cittaṃ pradūṣya āśīviṣavādena samudācaritāḥ, tena nāgeṣūpapannaḥ | yat tena dānapradānāni dattāni, brahmacaryavāsaḥ paripālitaḥ, tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam*, araṇāvihāriṇāṃ cāgro nirdiṣṭaḥ | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
