buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | tena khalu samayena dakṣiṇāpathe kalpo nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca praśānta­kalikalahaḍimbaḍa­maraṃ taskararogāpagataṃ śālīkṣugomahiṣīsaṃpannam* | priyam ivaikaputrakaṃ rājyaṃ pālayati | so ’pareṇa samayena devyā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ putro jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ sarvāṅgapratyaṅgopetaḥ | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā kapphiṇa iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam* | kapphiṇo dārako ’ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo datto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* | yasminn eva divase kapphiṇaḥ kumāro jātaḥ, tasminn eva divase aṣṭādaśānām amātyasahasrāṇāṃ putrā jātāḥ, sarve mahānagnāḥ | teṣāṃ pratirūpāṇi nāmāni vyavasthāpitāni ||

yad rājā kalpaḥ kāladharmeṇa saṃyuktaḥ, tasyātyayāt kapphiṇaḥ kumāro rājye pratiṣṭhitaḥ | tāni cāṣṭādaśāmātyaputra­sahas­rāṇi sarvāṇy amātyatve niyuktāni | athāpareṇa samayena rājā mahākapphiṇo ’ṣṭādaśāmātya­sahas­ra­pari­vṛto mṛgavadhāya nirgataḥ | purastāt pṛṣṭhataś ca sarvabalaugham avalokyāmātyān āmantrayate: asti bhavantaḥ kasyacid evaṃrūpo balaughaḥ tadyathā mamaivaitarhīti? tataḥ priyavādibhir amātyair abhihitam*: deva nānyasya kasyacid iti | atha madhyadeśād vaṇijo dakṣiṇāpathaṃ gatāḥ | tai rājño mahākapphiṇasya prābhṛtam upanītam* | rājñā uktāḥ: bho vaṇijaḥ, kas tatra rājeti | vaṇijaḥ kathayanti: deva kecid deśā gaṇādhīnāḥ kecid rājādhīnā iti | yāvad rājñā mahākapphiṇena śrāvastyādiṣu ṣaṭsu mahānagareṣu dūtasaṃpreṣaṇaṃ kṛtam* | yady utthitā bhavatha nopaveṣṭavyam*, śīghram āgantavyam*, anyathā va uttamena daṇḍena samanuśāsiṣyāmīti | etad vacanam upaśrutya ṣaṇmahānagaravāsino rājāno bhītās trastāḥ saṃvignā āhṛṣṭaromakūpāḥ saṃgamya samāgamya ekasamūhena śrāvastīm anuprāptāḥ | tato bhagavatsakāśaṃ gatāḥ | taiḥ sa vṛttānto bhagavato vistareṇa niveditaḥ | bhagavatā te samāśvāsitāḥ, uktāś ca: sa dūto matsakāśam ānetavya iti | tatas tair dūtasya niveditam* | asty asmākaṃ rājādhirāja, taṃ tāvat paśyeti ||

tato bhagavatā dūtāgamanam avetya jetavanaṃ catūratnamayam nirmitaṃ devānām iva sudarśanaṃ nagaram* | atra catvāro mahārājāno dauvārikāḥ sthāpitāḥ, airāvatasadṛśā hastinaḥ, bālāhakasadṛśā aśvāḥ, nandīghoṣasadṛśā rathāḥ, vyāḍayakṣsadṛśā manuṣyāḥ | svayaṃ ca bhagavatā cakravartiveṣo nirmitaḥ, saptatālodgataṃ ca simḥāsanaṃ yatra bhagavān niṣaṇṇāḥ | tato dūtas tathāvidhāṃ śobhāṃ dṛṣṭvā paraṃ vismayam āpannaḥ | tato bhagavatā lekhaṃ lekhayitvā sa dūto ’bhihitaḥ: kapphiṇo madvacanād vaktavyaḥ: lekhavācanasamakālam eva yady utthito bhavasi, nopaveṣṭavyam*, śīghram āgantavyam* | athavā nāgacchasi, aham eva mahatā balaughena sārdham āgamiṣyāmīti | tato dūtena gatvā rājño mahākapphiṇasya lekhaṃ vācikaṃ ca yat saṃdiṣṭaṃ tat sarvaṃ niveditam* ||

tataḥ kapphiṇo rājā aṣṭādaśāmātya­gaṇa­sahas­ra­pari­vṛto ’nupūrveṇa cañcūryamāṇaḥ śrāvastīm anuprāptaḥ | prātisīmāś ca rājāno rājānaṃ mahākapphiṇaṃ pratyudgatāḥ | tair mahāsatkāreṇa nagaraṃ praveśitaḥ | mārgaśramaṃ prativinodya bhagavato niveditavantaḥ | tato bhagavatā tasyāgamanam avetya jetavanaṃ catūratnamayaṃ nirmitaṃ devānām iva sudarśanaṃ nagaram* | yatra catvāro mahārājāno dauvārikāḥ sthāpitāḥ | airāvatasadṛśā hastinaḥ, bālāhakasadṛśā aśvāḥ, nandīghoṣasadṛśā rathāḥ, vyāḍayakṣasadṛśā manuṣyāḥ | svayaṃ ca bhagavatā cakravartiveṣo nirmitaḥ | saptatālodgataṃ ca siṃhāsanaṃ sarvaṃ tathaiva nirmitam* | tato rājā mahākapphiṇo jetavanaṃ praviṣṭaḥ | sahadarśanād asya yo rūpo rūpamadaḥ, aiśvarye aiśvaryamadaḥ, sa prativigataḥ | baladarpo ’dyāpi pratibādhata eva | tato bhagavatā laukikaṃ cittam utpāditam*: aho bata śakro devendra aindraṃ dhanur ādāya āgacchatv iti | sahacittotpādād bhagavataḥ śakro devendraḥ sārathiveṣeṇa aindraṃ dhanur upanāmayati | bhagavatā mahākapphiṇasyopanāmitam* | tac ca rājā mahākapphiṇa utkraṣṭum api na śaknoti, kutaḥ punar āropayiṣyati | tato bhagavatā saptāyobheryo nirmittāḥ | svayaṃ ca tad dhanur ardhacandrākāreṇāropya śaraḥ kṣiptaḥ, yena tāḥ saptāyobheryaś chidrīkṛtāḥ | tataḥ śabdaṃ nirgataḥ:

ārabhadhvaṃ niṣkrāmata yujyadhvaṃ buddhaśāsane
dhunīta mṛtyunaḥ sainyaṃ naḍāgāram iva kuñjaraḥ ||

yo hy asmin dharmavinaye apramattaś cariṣyati
prahāya jātisaṃsāraṃ duḥkhasyāntaṃ kariṣyati || iti

sa ca śabdo yāvad akaniṣṭhān devān gataḥ | tato rājñaḥ kapphiṇasya yo ’bhūd balamadaḥ, sa prativigataḥ | tasya buddhir utpannā: kim idam iti | tato bhagavān rājño mahākapphiṇasya cittaprakāram upalakṣya rājaveṣam antardhāpya idaṃ sūtram āradbhavān*: Cf. DbSū(2)

daśabalasamanvāgato bhikṣavas tathāgato ’han samyaksaṃbuddhaś catur vaiśāradyaviśārada udāram ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānīte, brahmacaryaṃ pravartayati, parṣadi samyaksiṃhanādaṃ nadati: yadutāsmin satīdaṃ bhavati, asyotpādād idam utpadyate | yaduta avidyāpratyayāḥ saṃskārāḥ | saṃskārapratyayaṃ vijñānam* | vijñānapratyayaṃ nāmarūpam* | nāmarūpapratyayaṃ ṣaḍāyatanam* | ṣaḍayatanapratyayaḥ sparśaḥ | sparśapratyayā vedanā | vedanāpratyayā tṛṣṇā | tṛṣṇāpratyayam upādānam* | upādānapratyayo bhavaḥ | bhavapratyayā jātiḥ | jātipratyayā jarā­maraṇa­śoka­pari­deva­duḥkha­daurmanasyopāyāsāḥ saṃbhavanti | evam asya kevalasya mahato duḥkhaskandhasya samudayo bhavati | yaduta asminn asatīdaṃ na bhavati, asya nirodhād idaṃ nirudhyate | yaduta avidyānirodhāt saṃskāranirodhaḥ | saṃskāranirodhād vijñānanirodhaḥ | vijñānanirodhān nāmarūpanirodhaḥ | nāmarūpanirodhāt ṣaḍāyatananirodhaḥ | ṣaḍāyatananirodhāt sparśanirodhaḥ | sparśanirodhād vedanānirodhaḥ | vedanānirodhāt tṛṣṇānirodhaḥ | tṛṣṇānirodhād upādānanirodhaḥ | upādānanirodhād bhavanirodhaḥ | bhavanirodhāj jātinirodhaḥ | jātinirodhāj jarā­maraṇa­śoka­pari­deva­duḥkha­daurmanasyopāyāsā nirudhyante | evam asya kevalasya mahato duḥkhaskandhasya nirodho bhavati | svākhyāto me bhikṣavo dharmaḥ, uttāno vivṛtaś chinnaplotiko yāvad devamanuṣyebhyaḥ samyaksuprakāśitaḥ | evaṃ svākhyāte me dharme uttāne vivṛte chinnaplotike yāvad devamanuṣyebhyaḥ samyaksuprakāśite yāvad alam eva bhikṣavaḥ śraddhāpravrajitena kulaputreṇa alaṃ yogāya alam apramādāya, alaṃ śāstuḥ śāsane yogam āpattum*, kāmaṃ tvaksnāyvasthy avatiṣṭhatām*, pariśuṣyatu śarīrān māṃsaśoṇitam* | atha ca punar yat tadārabdhavīryeṇa prāptavyaṃ sthāmavatā vīryavatā utsāhinā dṛḍhaparākrameṇānikṣiptadhureṇa kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu, tadvahanānuprāptā na vīryasya sraṃsanaṃ bhaviṣyati | tat kasya hetoḥ? duḥkhaṃ hi kusīdo viharati vyavakīrṇa, pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ sāṃkleśikaiḥ paunarbhavikaiḥ sajvarair duḥkhavipākaiḥ āyatyāṃ jātijarāmaraṇīyaiḥ mahataś cārthasya parihāṇir bhavati | ārabdhavīryas tu sukhaṃ viharaty avakīrṇaḥ pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ sāṃkleśikaiḥ paunarbhavikaiḥ sajvarair duḥkhavipākaiḥ āyatyāṃ jātijarāmaraṇīyaiḥ | mahataś cārthasya pāripūrir bhavati | maṇḍayeyam idaṃ pravacanaṃ yaduta śāstā ca saṃmukhībhūtaḥ | dharmaś ca deśyata aupaśamikaḥ pārinirvāṇikaḥ saṃbodhigāmī sugatapraveditaḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ātmārthaṃ ca samanupaśyadbhiḥ parārthaṃ cobhayārthaṃ ca, idaṃ pratisaṃśikṣitavyam: kaccin naḥ pravrajyā amoghā bhaviṣyati, saphalā sukhodayā sukhavipākā | yeṣāṃ ca paribhokṣyāmahe cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārān*, teṣāṃ ca te kārāḥ kṛtāḥ kaccid atyarthamahāphalā bhaviṣyanti, mahānuśaṃsā mahādyutayo mahāvaistārāḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

asmin khalu dharmaparyāye bhāṣyamāṇe rājñā mahākapphiṇena aṣṭādaśāmātya­gaṇa­sahas­ra­pari­vāreṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyo bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta kapphiṇena karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenābhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko ’ṣṭādaśāmātya­gaṇa­sahas­ra­pari­vāro mahānagnabalaḥ, pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: kapphiṇenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | kapphiṇena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany ekanavate kalpe vipaśyī nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa bandhumatīṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati bandhumatīyake dāve | yāvad anyatamena sārthavāhena mahāsamudrāt prabhūtāni ratnāny ānītāni | vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ saśrāvakasaṃghas traimāsyaṃ bhaktenopanimantritaḥ | vihāraṃ ca kārayitvā cāturdiśāya bhikṣusaṃghāya bhikṣusaṃghāya niryātitavān* ||

kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ yo ’sau sārthavāhaḥ, eṣa evāsau kapphiṇo rājā tena kālena tena samayena | yad anena vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ saśrāvakasaṃghas traimāsyaṃ svāntargṛhe bhaktenopanimantritaḥ, vihāraṃ ca kārayitvā cāturdiśāya bhikṣusaṃghāya niryātitaḥ ### tenedānīm abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ ### aparāṇy api bhikṣavaḥ kapphiṇena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ mahānagaryāṃ brahmadatto nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca praśānta­kalikalahaḍimbaḍa­maraṃ taskararogāpagataṃ śālīkṣugomahiṣīsaṃpannam* | dhārmiko dharmarājo dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayati | so ’pareṇa samayena saṃprāpte vasantakālasamaye, saṃpuṣpiteṣu pādapeṣu, haṃ­sakrauñcama­yūra­śukaśārikākokilajīvañjīvakanirghoṣite vanaṣaṇḍe aṣṭādaśāmātya­gaṇa­sahas­ra­pari­vṛta udyānaṃ nirgataḥ | tena tatrodyāne glānaḥ pratyekabuddhaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ | sa tena sāṃpreyabhojanena traimāsyam upasthitaḥ | parinirvṛtasya ca śarīrastūpaṃ kārayitvā amātyagaṇasahāyena tailābhiṣeko dattaḥ | tena saparivāro mahānagnabalādhānena saṃvṛttaḥ | bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati pravrajite babhūva | tatrānenendriyaparipākaḥ kṛtaḥ | tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
