87: śobhitaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ kapilavastuni viharati nyagrodhārāme | kapilavastuni anyatamaḥ śākya āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko ’tikrānto mānuṣavarṇam asaṃprāptaś ca divyaṃ varṇam* | tasya janmany anekāny adbhutāni prādurbhūtāni, yaiḥ kapilavastu nagaraṃ samantataḥ śobhitam* | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād asya janmani kapilavastu nagaraṃ samantataḥ śobhitam*, tasmād asya bhavatu śobhita iti nāmeti | śobhito dārako ’ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo datto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* ||

sa yadā mahān samvṛttas tadā nyagrodhārāmaṃ gato bhagavato darśanāya | dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasāditam* | prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā śobhitena dārakeṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotaāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyo mātāpitarāv anujñāpya bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta śobhitena karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenābhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko ’tikrānto mānuṣavarṇam asaṃprāptaś ca divyaṃ varṇam*, janmani cāsyānekāni adbhutāni prādurbhūtāni, yaiḥ kapilavastu nagaraṃ samantataḥ śobhitam*? bhagavān āha: śobhitenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | śobhitenaiva karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany asminn eva bhadrake kalpe catvāriṃ­śadvarṣa­sahas­rāyuṣi prajāyāṃ krakucchando nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa śobhāvatīṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati | śobhena rājñā keśanakhastūpaḥ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ | yāvat kasmiṃścit parvaṇi pratyupasthite goṣṭhikāḥ stūpasamīpaṃ gatāḥ | tais taṃ stūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā pasādajātaiḥ puṣpāropaṇaṃ kartum ārabdham* | tatraiko goṣṭhikaḥ kathayati: ahaṃ na karomi, mama vibhavo nāstīti | sa taiś ca goṣṭhikamadhyān niṣkāsitaḥ | tasya vipratisāro jātaḥ | tena vicitrapuṣpasaṃgrahaṃ kṛtvā tasminn eva stūpe puṣpāropaṇaṃ kṛtam* ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena goṣṭhika āsīt, yena vipratisārajātena krakucchandasya keśanakhastūpe puṣpāripaṇaṃ kṛtam*, ayam asau śobhitaḥ | anyāny api hi bhikṣavaḥ śobhitena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryām anyatamaḥ śreṣṭhī | tena glānaḥ pratyekabuddho dṛṣṭaḥ | tataḥ prasādajātena pādayor nipatya piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ paṭena cācchāditaḥ ||

kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena śreṣṭhī, ayaṃ śobhitaḥ | bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati daridro ’bhūt kāṣṭhahārakaḥ | sa kāṣṭhānām arthe parvatadarīṃ praviṣṭaḥ | tena stūpo dṛṣṭaḥ | tatra ca stūpāṅgaṇe tṛṇāni jātāni | tatas tena prasādajātena tṛṇāny utpāṭya saṃmārjanīṃ gṛhītvā stūpāṅgaṇaṃ ca saṃmṛṣṭam* | tataḥ pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kartum ārabdhaḥ: anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena cittotpādena deydharmaparityāgena ca abhirūpaḥ syāṃ darśanīyaḥ prasādikaḥ, anāgatāṃś ca buddhān ārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyam iti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena kāṣṭhahāraka āsīt, ayam evāsau śobhitaḥ | yad anena stūpāṅgaṇaṃ saṃmṛṣṭam*, tena yatra yatra jātas tatra tatrābhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prasādikaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | tenaiva hetunedānīm ārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
