85: yaśomitraḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | śrāvastyām anyatamaḥ sārthavāha āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tena khalu samayena durbhikṣam abhūt kṛcchram* | kāntāradurlabhaḥ Speyer: durlambhaḥ piṇḍako yācanakena | naimittikaiś ca nirdiṣṭo devo na varṣiṣyatīti | yāvat sārthavāhapatnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ sarvāṅgopetaḥ | yatra ca divase dārako jātas tatraiva divase ’nāvṛṣṭir bhagnā | tasya yaśasā sarvā śrāvastī āpūritā | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād asya samantād yaśo visṛtam*, tasmād bhavatu dārakasya yaśomitra iti nāmeti | yaśomitro dārako ’ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo datto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* ||

yadā yaśomitro mahān saṃvṛttas tadā jetavanaṃ nirgataḥ kenacid eva karaṇīyena | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cāsya prasādo jātaḥ | prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasya bhagavatā tādṛśī saṃsāravairāgyikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā saṃsāradoṣadarśī nirvāṇaguṇadarśī bhūtvā mātapitarāv anujñāpya bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | tasya daṃṣṭrābhyām aṣṭāṅgopetaṃ pānīyaṃ prasravati, yenāsya tṛṣā na bādhate | yadā nidāghakāle bhikṣavas tṛṣārtāḥ pānakasyārthe saṃgham avataranti, tadāpy asau nāvatarati | tato ’sya supremakā bhikṣavaḥ pṛcchanti: kena hetunā bhavatas tṛṣā na bādhata iti | sa kathayati: mamaitābhyāṃ daṃṣṭrābhyām aṣṭāṅgopetaṃ pānīyaṃ prasravati, yena na me tṛṣā bādhatā iti ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta yaśomitreṇa karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenābhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ, daṃṣṭrāntarāc cāṣṭāṅgopetaṃ pānīyaṃ prasravati, pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: yaśomitreṇaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | yaśomitreṇa karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany asminn eva bhadrake kalpe viṃśativarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīm upaniśritya viharati ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve | yāvad anyataraḥ śreṣṭhiputro ’nyatarasya vṛddhabhikṣoḥ sakāśe pravrajitaḥ | so ’laso necchati samayācārikāṃ caritum* | tataḥ sa brahmacāribhiḥ sthavirasyopasthāyako dattaḥ | sa upasthāyakam ātmānaṃ matvā vṛddhatarāṇāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ sakāśād upasthānaṃ svīkaroti | tasyākuśalamūlāny aparyantāni ||

yāvad apareṇa samayena glānyaṃ patitaḥ | sthavireṇāsya vaidyopadeśād ghṛtaṃ pānāya dattam* | sa rātrau tṛṣātrāsitaḥ Speyer: tṛṣā trāsitaḥ svakaṃ kamaṇḍalukam upagṛhya pānīyaṃ pāsyāmīti paśyati nirudakam* | evam ācāryopādhyāyānām* | yāvat sāṃghikaṃ pānīyamaṇḍapam avatīrṇaḥ | tad api nirudakaṃ paśyati | yāvan nadīcārikām avatīrṇaḥ | sāpi nirudakā saṃvṛttā | sa udvignaḥ svakānāṃ sabrahmacāriṇām udvejanārthaṃ śraddhādeyasya ca gurutvasaṃdarśanārtham*, nadīcārikāyāḥ pari­vṛkṣaḥ Speyer: pare vṛkṣaḥ, tatra śāṭakaṃ baddhvā samabhirūḍhaḥ, svakarmāṇi mamety avetya karmapratiśaraṇāvasthitaḥ Speyer: karmapratisaraṇāvasthitaḥ | yāvad dvitīye divase prabhātāyāṃ rajanyām etad vṛttāntaṃ sabrahmacāriṇām ārocayati | tato ’sya sabrahmacāriṇaḥ pretakaraṇaṃ śrutvodvignāḥ, itaś cāmutaś cārocayitum ārabdhāḥ | tato ’sya upādhyāyena pānīyam upanāmitam* | tad api na paśyati | tenāpi saṃvignena bhagavataḥ kāśyapasya niveditam* | bhagavatā kāśyapenoktaḥ: gaṇḍīr ākoṭyatām iti | tata upadhivārikeṇa gaṇḍīr ākoṭitā | buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃghaḥ saṃnipatitaḥ ||

eṣa vṛttānto vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ samantato visṛtaḥ | tato ’nekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi saṃnipatitāni | yāvad upādhyāyena vṛddhānte niṣādayitvā udakapurṇā kuṇḍikā dattā | vatsa etat pānīyaṃ saṃghe cārayeti | sa pratyakṣaphaladarśī tenaiva saṃvegena buddhe bhagavti śrāvakeṣu ca prasādam utpādya tīvreṇāśayena tad udakaṃ saṃghe cāritavān* | tato bhagavatā tasyānugrahārthaṃ gajabhujasadṛśaṃ bāhum abhiprasārya bhītānām āśvāsanakareṇa tad udakaṃ gṛhītaṃ mahāśrāvakaiś ca | na ca kṣīyate | yāvat sarvasaṃghe cāritam*, tadāpi na kṣīyate | tad atyadbhutaṃ devamanuṣyāvarjanakaraṃ prātihāryaṃ dṛṣṭvā anekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasraiḥ satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam* | tasyāpi saṃtāne ’kuśalamūlāni pratisaṃhṛtāni | yadā tasmād glānyād vyutthitaḥ, tadā tena buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃghaḥ pānīyenālpotsukaḥ kṛtaḥ | dvādaśa varṣasahasrāṇi tena saṃghe pānīyaṃ cāritam* | yāvan maraṇakālasamaye praṇidhānaṃ kṛtavān*: anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena cittotpādena deyadharmaparityāgena ca yo ’sau bhagavatā kāśyapena uttaro nāma māṇavo vyākṛtaḥ: bhaviṣyasi tvaṃ māṇava varṣaśatāyuṣi prajāyāṃ śākyamunir nāma tathāgato ’rhan samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ, tam aham ārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyam*, daṃṣṭrāntarāc ca me ’ṣṭāṅgopetaṃ pānīyaṃ nirgacched iti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena bhikṣur āsīt, ayaṃ saḥ | yat tena dvādaśa varṣasahasrāṇi saṃghe pānīyaṃ cāritam*, praṇidhānaṃ ca kṛtam*, teneha janmani daṃṣṭrāntarād aṣṭāṅgopetam pānīyaṃ nirgacchati | tenaiva hetunārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
