buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ kapilavastuni viharati nyagrodhārāme | kapilavastuni anyatamaḥ śākya āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ putro jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko maheśākhyaḥ śirasi maṇiratnayuktaḥ | ### Tib transl. seems to add afew sentaneces here, describing the sun line splendour of the gem on the crest. Cf. tasya maṇiratnasya prabhayā sarvaṃ gṛham avabhāsitaṃ sūryasyeva. | tasya jatau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād asya dārakasya śirasi maṇiratnaṃ prādurbhūtam*, tasya maṇiratnasya prabhayā sarvaṃ gṛham avabhāsitaṃ sūryasyeva, tasmād asya sūryo nāma bhavatu iti | sūryo dārako ’ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo datto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* | sa ca śrāddho bhadraḥ kalyāṇāśaya ātmahitaparahitapratipannaḥ kāruṇiko mahātmā dharmakāmaḥ prajāvatsalas tyāgaruciḥ pradānakauśalo mahati tyāge vartate |

yāvad apareṇa samayena sūryo dārako nyagrodhārāmaṃ gataḥ | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasādya svaśirasi maṇiratnam uddhṛtya bhagavata upanāmitam* | tataḥ prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tato bhagavatā sūryasyānukampām upādāya tan maṇiratnam upagṛhyāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā tena sūryeṇa dārakeṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyo dānapradānāni datvā śramaṇabrāhmaṇavanīpakān duḥkhitān satvān saṃtarpayitvā mātāpitarāv anujñāpya bhagavataḥ śāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta sūryeṇa dārakeṇa karmāṇi kṛtāny yena śirasi maṇiratnaṃ jātam*, yena ca maheśākhyo ’rhatvaṃ ca prāptam iti | bhagavān āha: sūryeṇaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | sūryeṇa karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani ekanavate kalpe vipaśyī nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa bandhumatīṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati | yāvad vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ sakalaṃ buddhakāryaṃ kṛtvā indhanakṣayād ivāgnir nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtaḥ, tasya rājñā bandhumatā śarīre śarīrapūjāṃ kṛtvā samantayojanaś catūratnamayaḥ stūpaḥ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ krośam uccatvena | yatrānekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi kārān kṛtvā svargamokṣaparāyaṇāni bhavanti | tatra stūpamaho vartate | śrāddhā brāhmaṇagṛhapatayo vicitrair gandhamālyavilepanaiś chatrair dhvajaiḥ patākābhiḥ pūjāṃ kurvanti | yāvad apareṇa puruṣeṇa rājñāḥ sakāśād dyūtaṃ krīḍataḥ sūryābhā­saṃ Speyer: sūryāvabhāsaṃ maṇiratnaṃ nirjitam* | tatas tena prasādajātena vipaśyinaś caitye varṣāsthālyāṃ samāropitam* | tataḥ pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam*: anenāhaṃ kuśalena cittotpādena deyadharmaparityāgena ca evaṃvidhānāṃ guṇānāṃ lābhī syām*, evaṃvidhaṃ śāstāram ārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyam*, evaṃvidhena cūḍāyāṃ baddhena mātuḥ kukṣer nirgaccheyam iti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena akṣadhūrta āsīt*, ayaṃ sa sūryaḥ | yat tena vipaśyinaḥ stūpe ratnaṃ samāropitaṃ tenāsya śirasi maṇiratnaṃ prādurbhūtam* | tenaiva hetunā abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ | arhatvaṃ ca sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
