52: candraḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | śrāvastyām anyatamaḥ karṣako brāhmaṇaḥ | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ sarvajana­mano­nayanaprahlādanakaraḥ | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād asya jātau sarvalokānāṃ nayanaprahlādanam*, tasmād bhavatu asya dārakasya candra iti nāmeti | sa ca tena brāhmaṇena kṛcchreṇa labdhaḥ | na cāsyānyaḥ putro na duhitā ||

sa unnīto vardhito mahān saṃvṛttaḥ | sa sarvalokaprahlādanakaratvād brāhmaṇagṛhapatibhiḥ kṛtsnaṃ nagaram anvāhiṇḍyata iti | sa brāhmaṇas tasmin bhūyasyā mātrayādhyavasito nityam eva kramasthānaśayyāsu saṃrakṣaṇaparo ’vatiṣṭhite | tasya ca brāhmaṇasyānāthapiṇḍadasamīpe gṛham* | atha sa brāhmaṇadārako ’nāthapiṇḍadasaṃsargāj jetavanaṃ gatvā buddhavacanaṃ śṛṇoti | tena bhagavacchāsane prasādaḥ pratilabdhaḥ | sa cālpāyuṣkaḥ kālaṃ kṛtvā praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ ||

dharmatā khalu devaputrasya vā devakanyāyā vā aciropapannasya trīṇi cittāny utpadyante: kutaś cyutaḥ, kutropapannaś ca kena karmaṇeti | paśyati manuṣyebhyaś cyutaḥ praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannāḥ, bhagavato ’ntike cittam ahiprasādyeti | atha brāhmaṇapūrviṇo devaputrasyaitad abhavat: na mama pratirūpaṃ syāt*, yad ahaṃ paryuṣitaparivāso bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam* | yanv aham aparyuṣitaparivāsa eva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam iti | atha brāhmaṇapūrvako devaputraś calavimalakuṇḍaladharo hārārdhahāravirājitagātro maṇiratnavicitracūḍaḥ kuṅkumatamāla­patras­pṛkkādi­saṃ­sṛṣṭagātras tasyām eva rātrau divyānām utpalakumuda­puṇḍa­rī­kama­ndāravāṇāṃ puṣpāṇām utsaṅgaṃ pūrayitvā sarvaṃ jetavanam udāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsya bhagavataṃ puṣpair avakīrya bhagavataḥ purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | atha bhagavān brāhmaṇapūrvakasya devaputrasyāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśīṃ caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikīṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavān, yāṃ śrutvā brāhmaṇapūrvakeṇa devaputreṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotaāpattiphalam prāptam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyas trir udānam udānayati: idam asmākaṃ bhadanta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na pitrā na rājñā na devatābhir neṣṭena svajanabandhuvargeṇa na pūrvapretair na śramaṇabrāhmaṇair yad bhagavatāsmākaṃ kṛtam* | ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrāḥ, laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ, pihitāny apāyadvārāṇi, vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi, pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ smo devamanuṣyeṣu | āha ca:

tavānubhāvāt pihitaḥ sughoro
hy apāyamārgo bahudoṣayuktaḥ |
apāvṛtā svargagatiḥ supuṇyā
nirvāṇamārgaś ca mayopalabdhaḥ ||

tvadāśrayāc cāptam apetadoṣaṃ
mayādya śuddhaṃ suviśuddhacakṣuḥ |
prāptaṃ ca śāntaṃ padam āryakāntaṃ
tīrṇaś ca duḥkhārṇavapāram asmi ||

vigatajanma­jarā­mara­ṇāma­yaṃ
bhava­sahas­rasudurlabhadarśana
saphalam adya mune tava darśanam* || iti

avanamya tataḥ pralambahāraś
caraṇau dvāv abhinandya jātaharṣaḥ
parigamya ca dakṣiṇaṃ jitāriṃ
suralokābhimukho divaṃ jagāma ||

atha brāhmaṇapūrvako devaputro vaṇig iva labdhalābhaḥ, sasyasaṃpanna iva karṣakaḥ śūra iva vijita­saṃg­rāmaḥ, sarvarogaparimukta ivāturo yayā hi vibhūtyā bhagavatsakāśam āgatas tayaiva vibhūtyā svabhavanaṃ gataḥ ||

bhikṣavaḥ pūrvarātrāpararātraṃ jāgarikāyogam anuyuktā viharanti | tair dṛṣṭo bhagavato ’ntike udāro ’vabhāsaḥ | yaṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃdigdhā bhagavantaṃ paprachuḥ: kiṃ bhagavann asyāṃ rātryāṃ bhagavantaṃ darśanāya brahmā sahāṃpatiḥ śakro devendraś catvāro lokapālā upasaṃkrāntāḥ? bhagavān āha: na bhikṣavo brahmā sahāṃpatir na śakro devendro nāpi catvāro lokapālā māṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāntāḥ, api yo ’sāv ekaputro ’sya brāhmaṇasya putro ’lpāyuṣkaḥ kālagataḥ, sa mamāntike cittam abhiprasādya praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ, so ’syāṃ rātrau matsakāśam upasaṃkrāntaḥ | tasya mayā dharmo deśitaḥ, dṛṣṭasatyaś ca svabhavanaṃ gataḥ ||

atra cāntare sa brāhmaṇas tam ekaputrakam iṣṭaṃ kāntaṃ priyaṃ manāpaṃ kṣāntam apratikūlaṃ śmaśāne nirhṛtyotsaṅge kṛtvā karuṇakaruṇaṃ vilapan* kathayati: hā putraka hā ekaputraketi | jñātayaḥ subahv api śokavinodanaṃ kurvaṇā na śaknuvanty utthāpayitum* | sa kākakuraraśvaśṛgālagṛdhra­pari­vṛtaḥ prakīrṇakeśībhiḥ strībhir anugato mahājanakāyena codvīkṣyamāṇas tiṣṭhati | tato ’sya putro devabhūtaḥ pitaraṃ paridevamānaṃ dṛṣṭvā kāruṇyād ākampitahṛdayaḥ pituḥ śokavinodanārtham ṛṣiveṣadhāriṇam ātmānam abhinirmāya śmaśānasamīpe pañcatapāvasthitaḥ | atha sa brāhmaṇas tam ṛṣiṃ papraccha: bho maharṣe anena tapasā kiṃ prārthayasa iti | ṛṣir āha: rājyaṃ prārthaye, sauvarṇaś ca me rathaḥ syān nānāratnavicitraḥ, sūryācandramasau rathacakre syātām*, catvāraś ca lokapālāḥ purastān nameyuḥ | so ’haṃ taṃ ratham abhiruhyemāṃ mahāpṛthivīm anvāhiṇḍeyeti | brāhmaṇaḥ kathayati:

yadi varṣaśataṃ pūrṇaṃ tapiṣyasi nirantaram*
na lapsyase ’pi tat sthānaṃ paramatapasāpi hi || iti ||

ṛṣiḥ kathayati: tvaṃ ca punar anena mṛtakuṇapenāśucinā paramadurgandhena śavena kāṣṭhabhūtena kiṃ prārthayasa iti | brāhmaṇaḥ prāha: priyo me ekaputrakaḥ kālagataḥ, taṃ prārthaya iti | ṛṣir āha:

yadi varṣaśataṃ pūrṇaṃ rodiṣyasi nirantaram*
na lapsyase ’pi taṃ putraṃ ruditena hi kiṃ tava || iti ||

tatas tasya brāhmaṇasya bhūtam ṛṣivacanam avagatya prasādo jātaḥ | prasādajātaś cāha: kas tvam iti | tata ṛṣis taṃ veṣam antardhāpya svaveṣeṇa sthitvā pitaram āha: ahaṃ te sa ekaputrako bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasādya kālagataḥ | praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ | tava śokavinodanārtham ihāgataḥ | ehi tvaṃ tāta buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ śaraṇaṃ gaccha, apy eva tvam api saṃsārasamatikrāmaṃ kuryā iti ||

atha sa brāhmaṇo mṛtaśarīram apahāya yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasmai bhagavatā caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā tena brāhmaṇeṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotaāpattiphalam prāptam* | sa labdhodayo labdhalābho bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavantaṃ triḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya prakrāntaḥ ||

tato bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: paśya bhagavan, yāvad anena devaputreṇāyaṃ pitā śokaṃ vinodya satyadarśane pratiṣṭhāpita iti | bhagavān āha: kim atra bhikṣava āścaryaṃ yad anenaitarhi dṛṣṭasatyena pitā paritrātaḥ | yat tv anena atīte ’dhvani pṛthagjanena satā yāvat trir api pitā jīvitād vyavaropyamāṇaḥ paritrātaḥ | tac chruṇuta, sādhu ca suṣṭhu ca manasi kuruta, bhāṣiṣye ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryām anyatamaḥ pāradārikaḥ | tasya putro bhadraḥ kalyāṇāśayo ’tīva lokasyābhimataḥ | yāvad asya pitrā cauryaṃ kṛtam* | tato rājñā vadhyatām ity ājñaptam* | tataḥ putreṇa yāvat trir api rājānaṃ vijñāpya iṣṭena jīvitenācchāditaḥ ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena pāradārika āsīt*, ayaṃ sa brāhmaṇaḥ | pāradārikaputro ’yam eva brāhmaṇadārakaḥ ||

bhikṣava ūcuḥ: kiṃ karma kṛtaṃ yena pitāputrābhyāṃ satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: kāśyape samyaksaṃbuddhe upāsakabhūtābhyāṃ śaraṇagamanaśikṣā­padag­rahaṇaṃ kṛtam* | tenedānīṃ satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam* | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣavaḥ sarvasaṃskārā anityāḥ, sarvadharmā anātmānaḥ, śāntaṃ nirvāṇam iti nirvāṇe yatnaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo ’nye ca devāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragādayo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
