51: kṛṣṇasarpaḥ

tasyoddānam*:
kṛṣṇasarpaś ca candraś ca sālaḥ śrīmatir eva ca
vastraṃ śukaś ca dūtaś ca mahiṣaḥ poṣadhaś ca vai

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃgho rājagṛham upaniśritya viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe | rājagṛhe nagaradvāre ’nyataro gṛhapatir āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | sa ca matsarī kuṭukuñcaka āgṛhītapariṣkāraḥ kākāyāpi baliṃ na pradātuṃ vyavasyati | sa śramaṇabrāhmaṇavanīpakān dṛṣṭvā cittaṃ pradūṣayati | svake codyāne mahān hiraṇyasuvarṇasya rāśiḥ sthāpitaḥ | sa tatra gṛddho ’dhyavasitaḥ kālagataḥ ||

sa kālaṃ kṛtvā tasyaivopari āśīviṣa utapanno mahān kṛṣṇasarpo dṛṣṭiviṣaḥ | atha ye tad udyānaṃ janakāyāḥ praviśanti, tān prekṣitamātreṇa jīvitād vyaparopayati | eṣa ca śabdo rājagṛhe nagare samantato visṛtaḥ: ye amukam udyānaṃ praviśanti, sarve te nidhanam upayāntīti | janakāyena ca rājñe bimbisārāya niveditam* ||

atha rājño bimbisārasyaitad abhavat*: kas taṃ śakyati vinetum anyatra buddhād bhagavata iti | atha rājā bimbisāro mahājanakāyaparivṛto yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvaikānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ rājānaṃ bimbisāraṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati | anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm* | atha rājā bimbisāra utthāyāsanād ekāṃsam uttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā dakṣiṇaṃ jānumaṇḍalaṃ pṛthivyāṃ pratiṣṭhāpya yena bhagavāṃs tenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantam idam avocat*: iha bhagavan rājagṛhe nagare ’muṣminn udyāne mahānāśīviṣaḥ kṛṣṇasarpo dṛṣṭiviṣaḥ prativasati, mahājanavipraghātaṃ karoti | sādhu bhagavāṃs tam vinayed anukampām upādāyeti | adhivāsayati bhagavān rājño bimbisārasya tūṣṇībhāvena | atha rājā bimbisāro bhagavatas tūṣṇībhāvenādhivāsanāṃ viditvā bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvotthāyāsanāt prakrāntaḥ ||

atha bhagavāṃs tasyā eva rātrer atyayāt pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaram ādāya yena tad udyānaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavatā sūryasahasrātirekaprabhāḥ kanakavarṇā marīcaya utsṛṣṭāḥ, yais tad udyānaṃ sarvam avabhāsitam* | kalpasahasraparibhāvitāś ca maitryaṃśava utsṛṣṭāḥ, yair asya spṛṣṭamātraṃ śarīraṃ prahlāditam* | atha sa āśīviṣa itaś cāmutaś ca prekṣitum ārabdhaḥ: kasya prabhāvān mama śarīraṃ prahlāditam iti | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike citaṃ prasāditaṃ* | prassannacittasya ca bhagavatā tan mayyā gatyās tan mayyā yonyā dharmo deśitaḥ: bhadramukha tvayaivaitad dravyam upārjitam* | yena tvam āśīviṣagatim upapāditaḥ | sādhu mamāntike cittaṃ prasādya, asmāc ca nidhānāc cittaṃ virāgaya | mā haiva itaḥ kālaṃ kṛtvā narakeṣūpapatsyasa iti | yadāsya bhagavatā jātiḥ smāritā, tadā rodituṃ pravṛttaḥ | atha bhagavāṃs tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthe bhāṣate:

idānīṃ kiṃ kariṣyāmi tiryagyonigatasya te
akṣaṇapratipannasya kiṃ rodiṣi nirarthakam* ||

sādhu prasādyatāṃ cittaṃ mahākāruṇike jine
tiryagyoniṃ virāgyeha tataḥ svargaṃ gamiṣyasi || iti ||

yāvad bhagavatā pātre prakṣipya veṇuvanaṃ nītaḥ | atrāntare rājñā māgadhena janakāyena ca śrutaṃ yathāsāv āśīviṣo bhagavatā vinīta iti ||

athāsāv āśīviṣaḥ svāśrayaṃ jugupsamāno ’nāhāratā pratipannaḥ | bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasādya kālagataḥ, praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃ­śeṣūpapannaḥ
dharmatā khalu devaputrasya vā devakanyāyā vā aciropapannasya trīṇi cittāny utpadyante: kutaś cyutaḥ kutropapannaḥ kena karmaṇeti | paśyati: āśīviṣebhyaś cyutaḥ, praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannāḥ, bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasādyeti || athāśīviṣapūrvakasya devaputrasyaitad abhavat: na mama pratirūpaṃ syāt*, yad ahaṃ paryuṣitaparivāso bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam* | yan nu aham aparyuṣitaparivāsa eva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam iti | athāśīviṣapūrvako devaputraś calavimalakuṇḍaladharo hārārdhahāravirājitagātro maṇiratnavicitracūḍaḥ kuṅkumatamāla­patras­pṛkkādi­saṃ­sṛṣṭagātras tasyām eva rātrau divyānām utpalapadmakumuda­puṇḍa­rī­kama­ndāravāṇāṃ puṣpāṇām utsaṅgaṃ pūrayitvā sarvaṃ veṇuvanaṃ kalandakanivāsam udāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsayan bhagavantaṃ puṣpair avakīrya bhagavataḥ purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | atha bhagavān āśīviṣapūrvikasya devaputrasyāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśīṃ caturāryatya­saṃ­prativedhikīṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavān, yāṃ śrutvā āśīviṣapūrvakeṇa devaputreṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotaāpattiphalaṃ prāptam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyas trir udānam udānayati: idam asmākaṃ bhadanta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na pitrā na rājñā na devatābhir neṣṭena svajanabandhuvargeṇa na pūrvapretair na śramaṇabrāhmaṇair yad bhagavatāsmākaṃ kṛtam* | ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrāḥ, laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ, pihitāny apāyadvārāṇi, vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi, pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ smo devamanuṣyeṣu | āha ca:

tavānubhāvāt pihitaḥ sughoro
hy apāyamārgo bahudoṣayuktaḥ |
apāvṛtā svargagatiḥ supuṇyā
nirvāṇamārgaś ca mayopalabdhaḥ ||

tvadāśrayāc cāptam apetadoṣaṃ
mayādya śuddhaṃ suviśuddhacakṣuḥ |
prāptaṃ ca śāntaṃ padam āryakāntaṃ
tīrṇaś ca duḥkhārṇavapāram asmi ||

naravarendra narāmarapūjita
vigatajanma­jarā­mara­ṇāma­yaṃ
bhava­sahas­rasudurlabhadarśana
saphalam adya mune tava darśanam* || iti

avanamya tataḥ pralambahāraḥ
caraṇau dvāv abhivandya jātaharṣaḥ
parigamya ca dakṣiṇaṃ jitārīṃ
suralokābhimukho divaṃ jagāma ||

athāśīviṣapūrvako devaputro vaṇig iva labdhalābhaḥ, saṃpannasasya iva karṣakaḥ śūra iva vijitasaṃgrāmaḥ, sarvarogaparimukta ivāturo yayā vibhūtyā bhagavatsakāśam upagatas tayaiva vibhūtyā tasyām eva rātrau rājño bimbisārasya sakāśam upasaṃkramya sarvaṃ rājakulam udāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsya rājānaṃ prabodhya etad uvāca: mahārāja uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha, kiṃ svapiṣīti | atha rājā prabuddhaḥ paśyati tam udāram avabhāsaṃ taṃ ca devaputram* | dṛṣṭvā prītamanās taṃ papraccha kas tvam iti | sa kathayati: ahaṃ sa dṛṣṭyāśīviṣo bhagavatā tatrodyāne vinītaḥ, kālaṃ kṛtvā praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ | bhagavantaṃ ca me paryupāsya satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam* | sa idānīṃ prabodhayāmi | gatvā tad udyānam amukasmāt pradeśān mahānidhānam utpāṭya mama nāmnā bhagavantaṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaṃ bhojaya, dakṣiṇādeśanāṃ ca kārayeti | adhivāsayati rājā bimbisāro devaputrasya tūṣṇībhāvena | athāśīviṣapūrvako devaputro rājñas tūṣṇībhāvenādhivāsanāṃ viditvā tatraivāntarhitaḥ ||

atha sa rājā bimbisāras tasyām eva rātrau māgadhānāṃ paurajānapadānāṃ nivedya tad udyānaṃ gatvā nidhānam utpāṭya bhagavantaṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaṃ traimāsyaṃ bhojayitvā bhagavantaṃ papraccha: kāni bhagavann aśīviṣapūrvakeṇa devaputreṇa karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenāśīviṣeṣūpapannaḥ: kāni karmāṇi kṛtāni yena deveṣūpapannaḥ, satyadarśanaṃ ca kṛtam iti? bhagavān āha: yat tenātimātro lobha utpāditaḥ, śrama­ṇabrāhmaṇavanīpakānāṃ cāntike cittaṃ praduṣitam*, tenāśīviṣeṣūpapannaḥ | yan mamāntike cittaṃ prasāditam*, tena deveṣūpapannaḥ | kāśyape ca samykasaṃbuddhe upāsakabhūtena śaraṇagamanaśikṣā­padag­rahaṇaṃ kṛtam*, tena satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam iti | tasmāt tarhi mahārāja mātsaryaprahāṇāya vyāyantavyam* | ete doṣā na bhaviṣyanti ye āśīviṣasya | eṣa eva guṇagaṇo bhaviṣyati, yas tasyaiva devaputrasyety evaṃ te mahārāja śikṣitavyam* | atha rājā bimbisāro bhagavato bhāṣitam abhinandyānumodya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvotthāyāsanāt prakrāntaḥ ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo ’nye ca devāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragādayo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
