45: maudgalyāyanaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃgho rājagṛham upaniśritya viharati sma veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe | tena khalu punaḥ samayena antarā ca rājagṛham antarā ca veṇuvanam atrāntare pañca pretaśatāni dagdhasthūṇākṛtīni nagnāni svakeśasaṃchannāni parvatopamakukṣīṇi sūcīchidropamamukhāni ādīptāni pradīptāni saṃprajvalitāny ekajvālībhūtāny ārtasvaraṃ pralapamānāni duḥkhāṃ tīvrāṃ kharāṃ kaṭukām amanāpāṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānāni vāyumaṇḍalavadākāśe paribhramanti, na kvacit pratiṣṭhāṃ labhante | athāyuṣmān mahamaudgalyāyanaḥ pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaram ādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat* | tena te pretā dṛṣṭāḥ, tair api pretair āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ | tatas te ekasamūhenāyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam upasaṃkrāntāḥ | upasaṃkramya karuṇadīnavilambitair akṣarair ekaraveṇocuḥ: vayaṃ smo bhadanta mahāmaudgalyāyana rājagṛhe pañca śreṣṭhiśatāny abhūvan* | te vayaṃ matsariṇaḥ kuṭukuñjakā āgṛhītapariṣkārāḥ | svayaṃ tāvad asmābhir dānapradānāni na dattāni, pareṣām api dānapradāneṣu dīyamāneṣu vighnāḥ kṛtāḥ, dakṣiṇīyāś ca bahavaḥ pretavādena paribhāṣitāḥ: pretopapannā iva yūyaṃ nityaṃ paragṛhebhyo bhaikṣyam aṭatha Speyer: aṭhatha | ete vayaṃ kālaṃ kṛtvā evaṃvidheṣu preteṣūpapannāḥ | iti bhadanta mahāmaudgalyāyana ye ’smākaṃ jñātayo rājagṛhe prativasanti, teṣām asmākīnāṃ karmaplotiṃ nivedya chandakabhikṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayitvā asmākaṃ nāmnā dakṣiṇādeśanāṃ kārayitvā cāsmākaṃ pretayoner mokṣaḥ syād iti | adhivāsayaty āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ pretānāṃ tūṣṇībhāvena | tata āyuṣmatā mahāmaudgalyāyanena teṣāṃ jñātigṛhebhyaś cchandakabhikṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃghaḥ śvo bhaktenopamantritaḥ | pretānāṃ ca niveditam*: śvo bhagavān sabhikṣusaṃgho bhaktenopanimantritaḥ, tatra yuṣmābhir āgantavyam iti | jñātīnām apy ārocitam*: bhavadbhir āgantavyaṃ tatra jñātibhojane | tān pretān drakṣyāmaḥ | athāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ svayam evodyukto bhojanaṃ pratijāgaritum* ||

atha prabhātāyāṃ rajanyām āhāre sajjīkṛte gaṇḍīdeśakāle saṃprāpte tān pretān na paśyati | tata āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano divyena cakṣuṣā tān pretān samanvāhartuṃ pravṛttaḥ | sarvasminn eva magadhamaṇḍale nādrākṣīt* | yāvat krameṇa cāturdvīpikaṃ vyavalokayituṃ pravṛttaḥ | tatrāpi nādrākṣīt* | tato yāvad asya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate, tato vyavalokayituṃ pravṛttaḥ | tatrāpi nādrākṣīt* | tata āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ saṃvigno bhagavate nivedayāmāsa: bhagavan, na me dānapatayo dṛśyanta iti | bhagavān āha: ayaṃ maudgalyāyana mā khedam āpadyasva | sarvaśrāvakapraty­eka­buddha­viṣayam atikramya aparimāṇā lokadhātavaḥ santi | tatra te karmavāyunā kṣiptāḥ | api maudgalyāyana adya tathāgatabalaṃ paśya | sarvajñajñānadarśanaṃ vyaktīkariṣyāmi | tathāgatavikurvitaṃ darśayiṣyāmi | ākoṭyatāṃ gaṇḍīti | tato gaṇḍyām ākoṭitāyāṃ sarvo bhikṣusaṃghaḥ saṃnipatitaḥ, pretajñātayo ’nye ca kautūhalyābhyāgatāḥ satvāḥ pretadarśanotsukāḥ saṃnipatitāḥ | tato bhagavatā ṛddhyā tathā darśitaṃ yathā pretā buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaṃ bhuñjānaṃ paśyanti, smṛtiṃ ca pratilabhante: jñātayo asmad arthe buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayantīti | tato bhagavān pañcāṅgopetena svareṇa dakṣiṇām ādiśati:

ito dānād dhi yat puṇyaṃ tat pretān anugacchatu
uttiṣṭhantāṃ kṣipram ete pretalokāt sudāruṇāt* || iti ||

yāvad bhagavatā tad adhiṣṭhānā tathāvidhā dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā anekair prāṇiśatasahasrair mātsaryamalaṃ prahāya satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam* | te ca pretā bhagavati cittam abhiprasādya kālagatāḥ, praṇīteṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannāḥ ||

dharmatā khalu devaputrasya vā devakanyakāyā vā aciropapannasya trīṇi cittāny utpadyante: kutaś cyutaḥ kutropapannaḥ kena karmaṇeti | paśyanti pretebhyaś cyutāḥ praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannāḥ, bhagavato ’ntike cittam ahiprasādyeti | atha pretapūrviṇāṃ devaputrāṇām etad abhavat: nāsmākaṃ pratirūpaṃ syāt, yad vayaṃ paryuṣitaparivāsā bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmema | yan nu vayam aparyuṣitaparivāsā eva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmemeti | atha pretapūrviṇo devaputrāś calavimalakuṇḍaladharā hārārdhahāravirājitagātrā maṇiratnavicitramaulayaḥ kuṅkumatamāla­patras­pṛkkādi­saṃ­sṛṣṭagātrās tasyām eva rātrau divyānām utpalapadma­puṇḍa­rī­kama­ndāravādīnāṃ puṣpāṇām utsaṅgaṃ pūrayitvā samantato venuvaṃ kalandakanivāpam udāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsya bhagavataṃ puṣpair ākīrya bhagavataḥ purastān niṣaṇṇā dharmaśravaṇāya | atha bhagavān pretapūrviṇāṃ devaputrāṇām āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśīṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavān, yāṃ śrutvā pretapūrvikair devaputrair mahān viśeṣo ’dhigataḥ | te labdhalābhā iva vaṇijo bhagavantaṃ triḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya tatraivāntarhitāḥ ||

tatra bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam āmantrayate | sādhu sādhu mahāmaudgalyāyana | saphalaṃ te vaiyāvṛtyaṃ saṃvṛttam* | yat te + + + pretā deveṣu pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ | te ’syāṃ rātrau matsakāśam upasaṃkrāntāḥ | teṣāṃ mayā dharmo deśitaḥ | te labdhodayā labdhalābhāḥ prakrāntā iti ||

tata āyuṣmatā mahāmaudgalyāyanena teṣāṃ jñātīnām ārocitam* | te śrutvā paraṃ vismayam upagatā bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasādayāmāsur bhūyaś ca satkāraṃ pracakrur iti | tasmāt tarhi te maudgalyāyana mātsaryaprahāṇāya vyāyantavyam* | ete doṣā na bhavanti ye teṣāṃ pretānām iti ||

idam avocad bhagavān | āttamanā āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano ’nye ca devāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragādayo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
