41: guḍaśālā

tasyoddānam*:
guḍaśālā ca bhaktaṃ ca toyaṃ varcaghaṭena ca
koliko hy uttaraś cāpi jātyandhaḥ śreṣṭhir eva ca
putro jāmbālakaś caiva vargo bhavati samudditaḥ ||

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃgho rājagṛhe viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe | yadā bhagavatā anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhir abhisaṃbuddhā, tadāyuṣmadbhyāṃ śāriput­rama­udgalyāyanābhyām iyaṃ pratijñā kṛtā: na tāvat piṇḍakaṃ pari­bhokṣyāmahe Speyer: paribhokṣyāvahe, yāvan narakatiryakpretebhya ekasatvam api na mocayāva iti | tatas tāv āyuṣmatau kālena kālaṃ kadācin narakacārikāṃ carataḥ, kadācit tiryakpretacārikāṃ carataḥ | tau tatra satvānāṃ vividhayātanābhyāhatānām asatpralāpaṃ dṛṣṭvā tān āgatya catasṛṇāṃ parṣadām ārocayataḥ | te ’pi śrutvā saṃvegam āpadyante | tatas tau tad adhiṣṭhānaṃ tathāvidhāṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kurutaḥ, yayā aneke satvā viśeṣam adhigacchanti, dharmaśravaṇakathāyāś ca bhājanībhavanti ||

yāvad apareṇa samayenāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ pretacārikāṃ carann adrākṣīt pretaṃ parvatakūṭaprakhyaṃ samudrasadṛśakukṣiṃ sūcīchidropamamukhaṃ svakeśasaṃchannam ādīptaṃ samyakprajvalitam ekajvālībhūtaṃ dhyāyantam ārtasvaraṃ krandantam*, duḥkhāṃ tīvrāṃ kharāṃ kaṭukām amanāpāṃ vedanām anubhavantam*, yena yenoccāraprasrāvabhūmis tena tenānvāhiṇḍamānaṃ tad api kṛcchreṇāsādayantam* | tataḥ sthaviraḥ pretaṃ papraccha: kiṃ te bhoḥ karma kṛtaṃ yenaivaṃvidhāṃ duḥkhāṃ tīvrāṃ kharāṃ kaṭukām amanāpāṃ vedanāṃ vedayasa iti | preta āha: āditye hi samudgate na dīpena prayojanam* | bhagavantam etam arthaṃ paripṛccha | sa te asmākīnāṃ karmaplotiṃ vyākariṣyatīti | athāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ ||

tena khalu samayena bhagavān pratisaṃlayanād vyutthāya catasṛṇāṃ parṣadāṃ madhuramadhuraṃ dharmaṃ deśayati, kṣaudraṃ madhv ivāneḍakam* | anekaśatā ca parṣad bhagavataḥ sakāśān madhuramadhuraṃ dharmaṃ śṛṇoty anijyamānair indriyaiḥ | tato buddhā bhagavantaḥ pūrvālāpinaḥ priyālāpinaḥ ehīti svāgatavādinaḥ smitapūrvaṃgamāś ca | tatra bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam idam avocat*: ehi maudgalyāyana svāgataṃ te, kutas tvam etarhy āgacchasīti | maudgalyāyana āha: āgacchāmy ahaṃ bhadanta pretacārikāyāḥ | tatrāhaṃ pretam adrākṣaṃ sūcīchidropamamukhaṃ parvatopamakukṣiṃ svakeśasaṃchannaṃ durgandhaṃ paramadurgandham* | āha ca:

viśuṣkakaṇṭhoṣṭhapuṭaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ pravṛddhaśailopamacarvitāśrayaḥ | Speyer: Ścañvitāśrayaḥ
svakeśasaṃchannamukho digambaraḥ susūkṣmasūcīsadṛśānanaḥ kṛśaḥ ||

nagnaḥ svakeśasaṃchanno asthiyantravaducchritaḥ
kapālapāṇir ghoraś ca krandan samabhidhāvati ||

bubhukṣayā pipāsayā klānto vyasanapīḍitaḥ
ārtasvaraṃ krandamāno duḥkhāṃ vedati vedanām*
kiṃ tena prakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ martyaloke sudāruṇam* || iti

bhagavān āha: pāpakārī maudgalyāyana sa pretaḥ | icchasi tasya karmaplotiṃ śrotum*? evaṃ bhadanta | tena hi maudgalyāyana śṛṇu, sādhu ca suṣṭhu ca manasi kuru, bhāṣiṣye ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ maudgalyāyana rājagṛhe nagare ’nyataraḥ śreṣṭhī āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tasya pañcamātrāṇīkṣuśālaśatāni, yatra cekṣuḥ pīḍyate | asati ca buddhānām utpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya | yāvad anyatamaḥ pratyekabuddho hīnadīnānukampakī prāntaśayanāsanasevī | sa pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaram ādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat* | sa ca bhadantaḥ kṣayavyādhinā spṛṣṭaḥ | tasya vaidyenekṣurasa upadiṣṭaḥ | sa śreṣṭhisakāśaṃ yantraśālām upasaṃkrāntaḥ | śreṣṭhinā ca sa pratyekabuddho dṛṣṭaḥ kāyaprāsādikaś cittaprāsādikaś ca | dṛṣṭvā śreṣṭhinā uktaḥ: kenāryasya prayojanam iti | pratyekabuddhaḥ kathayati: gṛhapate ikṣuraseneti | tatas tena gṛhapatinā bhṛtakapuruṣasyājñā dattā āryasyekṣurasaṃ prayaccheti | sa ca gṛhapatiḥ kenacid eva karaṇīyena bahir yānāya saṃprasthitaḥ | atha tasya puruṣasya parakīye dravye mātsaryam utpannam*: yady aham asya rasaṃ dāsye, punar apy eṣa āgamiṣyatīti | tena aniṣṭagatitrayaprapātanamreṇa sarvābhimatagatidvayanirākariṣṇunā atyantadūrāpagatenāryadharmebhyaḥ pāpaṃ cittam utpādya sa pratyekabuddha uktaḥ: āhara bhikṣo pātram*, dehi, rasaṃ te dāsyāmīti | asamanvāhṛtya arhacchrāvakapraty­eka­buddhānāṃ jñānadarśanaṃ na pravartata iti | hīnadīnānukampitayā bhṛtyapuruṣo ’yam asyānugrahaḥ kartavya iti tat pātram upanāmitam* | tato ’sau durācāro nirghṛṇahṛdayas tad gṛhītvā pratiguptaṃ pradeśaṃ gatvā prasrāveṇā pūrayitvā upari ikṣurasenācchādya tasmai praty­eka­buddhā­yānupradadau | tena saṃlakṣitam* sa cintayati: bahv anena tapasvinā pāpaṃ kṛtam api | sa tad ekānte chorayitvā prakrāntaḥ ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyase maudgalyāyana yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena bhṛtakapuruṣa āsīt’, ayaṃ sa pretaḥ | tasya karmaṇo vipākena saṃsāre ’nantaṃ duḥkham anubhūtavān* | idānīm api pretabhūtaḥ prakṛṣṭataraṃ duḥkham anubhavati | tasmāt tarhi te maudgalyāyana mātsaryaprahāṇāya vyāyantavyaṃ yathā evaṃvidhā doṣā na syur ye pretasya | iti hi maudgalyāyana ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi te maudgalyāyana ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ te maudgalyāyana śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān | āttamanā āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano ’nye ca devāsuragaruḍādayo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
