5. Worldly Conditions (1st)

1.1“Mendicants, the eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around the eight worldly conditions. 1.2What eight? 1.3Gain and loss, fame and disgrace, praise and blame, pleasure and pain. 1.4These eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around these eight worldly conditions.

2.1Gain and loss, fame and disgrace,
2.2praise and blame, and pleasure and pain.
2.3These qualities among people are impermanent,
2.4transient, and perishable.

3.1A clever and mindful person knows these things,
3.2seeing that they’re perishable.
3.3Desirable things don’t disturb their mind,
3.4nor are they repelled by the undesirable.

4.1Both favoring and opposing
4.2are cleared and ended, they are no more.
4.3Knowing the stainless, sorrowless state,
4.4they understand rightly, going beyond rebirth.”
