42. Ways of Answering Questions

1.1“Mendicants, there are these four ways of answering questions. 1.2What four? 1.3There is a question that should be answered definitively. 1.4There is a question that should be answered analytically. 1.5There is a question that should be answered with a counter-question. 1.6There is a question that should be set aside.

1.7These are the four ways of answering questions.

2.1One is stated definitively,
2.2another analytically,
2.3a third with a counter-question,
2.4while a fourth is set aside.

3.1A mendicant who knows each of these,
3.2in line with good principles,
3.3is said to be skilled
3.4in the four kinds of questions.

4.1They’re intimidating, hard to defeat,
4.2deep, and hard to crush.
4.3They’re expert in both
4.4what the meaning is and what it isn’t.

5.1Rejecting what is not the meaning,
5.2an astute person grasps the meaning.
5.3A wise one, comprehending the meaning,
5.4is called ‘astute’.”
