39. A Child

1.1“Mendicants, parents see five reasons to wish for the birth of a child in the family. 1.2What five? 1.3Since we looked after them, they’ll look after us. 1.4They’ll do their duty for us. 1.5The family traditions will last. 1.6They’ll take care of the inheritance. 1.7Or else when we have passed away they’ll give an offering on our behalf. 1.8Parents see these five reasons to wish for the birth of a child in the family.

2.1Seeing five reasons,
2.2astute people wish for a child.
2.3Since we looked after them, they’ll look after us.
2.4They’ll do their duty for us.

3.1The family traditions will last.
3.2They’ll take care of the inheritance.
3.3Or else when we have passed away
3.4they’ll give an offering on our behalf.

4.1Seeing these five reasons
4.2astute people wish for a child.
4.3And so good people,
4.4grateful and thankful,

5.1look after their parents,
5.2remembering what was done for them in the past.
5.3They do for their parents,
5.4as their parents did for them in the past.

6.1Following their advice, looking after those who raised them,
6.2the family traditions are not lost.
6.3Faithful, accomplished in ethics,
6.4such a child is praiseworthy.”
